Why One Umrah Package Costs $1,590 and Another Costs $2,275

Strip away the marketing and an Umrah package is four things bought in bulk: a flight, a hotel bed in Makkah, a hotel bed in Madinah, and the paperwork and transport that joins them together. The paperwork costs roughly the same for everybody. The transport costs roughly the same for everybody. So when two packages differ by several hundred dollars, the difference is nearly always in the beds and the flight.

That is why the same agency can advertise one price and charge another. Neither number has to be dishonest. They are answers to different questions.

Hotel rooms in Makkah are sold by the room, not by the person. A package sold by the person has to divide that room cost by the number of people in it. Four people in a room each carry a quarter of it. Two people each carry a half.

This is the single largest reason two quotes differ, and it is almost never the thing the headline number is explaining. Our Affordable tier is $1,590 per person on quad occupancy. The same tier, same hotels, same flights, same everything, is $1,990 per person if two of you share. Nothing about the trip changed. Only the arithmetic did.

In Makkah, walking distance to the Haram is the whole property market. A hotel you can walk out of and be inside the mosque in ninety seconds commands a price that a hotel fifteen minutes away simply cannot, because in Ramadan, or in August, or with elderly parents, those minutes are the difference between praying five times in the Haram and praying twice.

You can see it in our own tiers. Voco Makkah (IHG) is 5-7 minutes by shuttle. Rotana Jabal Omar Makkah is Under 2 minutes' walk. Swissotel Makkah, Clock Tower is Facing the Haram. All three are five-star. The stars are not what you are paying for.

A shuttle is not a bad thing. It runs, it is air conditioned, and for a lot of pilgrims it is the sensible trade that puts the whole trip within reach. But it is worth being honest about what it changes, because the brochures rarely are.

A shuttle runs to a timetable. That is fine for four of the five prayers and awkward for the fifth. It means leaving earlier than you would like and waiting afterwards when you would rather walk back slowly. Most people find they go to the Haram fewer times per day than they imagined they would. If your plan is to be in the mosque for every prayer, the walk is not a luxury, it is the plan.

Airfare from the US is the largest single line in the package, and it varies by where you start. Our prices are built on departures from JFK, IAD, ORD, ATL and LAX, because those are the routes with the capacity to Jeddah that keep a price stable. Flying from a smaller airport usually means a domestic connection, and that either adds cost or adds a night.

Routing matters as much as price. A connection through Europe or the Gulf can be several hundred dollars cheaper and add ten hours. That is a good trade for some travellers and a poor one for a family with young children or elderly parents, who will arrive too tired to pray.

Most confusion when comparing Umrah packages comes from comparing two different products and assuming they are the same one. Before you put two numbers side by side, make them answer the same question.

There is no universally right answer, and anyone who gives you one is selling rather than advising. But there is a right answer for your trip, and it usually falls out of two questions.

If this is a once in a lifetime journey and you intend to be in the Haram for every prayer, buy the distance and accept sharing a room. If you are travelling as a couple who value privacy after a long day, buy the occupancy and accept the shuttle. If you are a family of four, quad occupancy is not a compromise, it is simply how your family sleeps anyway, and it puts the Haram-facing hotels within reach at a price that surprises people.
