When the Institute for Social Policy and Understanding surveyed the region in 2013, San Francisco County accounted for about 3 percent of the community, far behind Alameda and Santa Clara counties. So in practice this is the SFO page, for anyone whose Umrah begins at the airport on the Peninsula, wherever home happens to be. One thing to know first: SFO isn't one of the five airports our airfare is priced from. You can still leave from it. The other way is a short flight to Los Angeles before the long leg. In 2013 the Institute for Social Policy and Understanding estimated that nearly 250,000 Muslims lived in the six counties around San Francisco. The 2020 U.S. Religion Census counted 60 Muslim congregations in the San Francisco-Oakland-Berkeley metro area. Downtown, the Islamic Society of San Francisco runs Masjid Darussalam at 20 Jones Street, where it meets Market Street. Across the bay, Zaytuna College was established in Berkeley in 2009.
Getting to Makkah from San Francisco
BART is the calmest way to reach SFO. The airport station is on the departures level of the International Terminal, where most of SFO's international flights check in, and BART puts the ride from downtown at about 30 minutes. Dropped at a domestic terminal instead? The free AirTrain runs to the BART station. Adult fares don't need a Clipper card, because the fare gates take contactless bank cards and phone wallets. One catch: BART starts late on Sundays, and it tells anyone with an early Sunday-morning flight to make other plans.
The flying itself takes most of a day. Expect one change of plane at a hub in Europe, Turkey or the Gulf, and roughly 20 to 26 hours from the gate here to Jeddah, depending on the layover. The other way to start is a hop down to LAX, one of the five airports our fares are built on, with the long leg leaving from there. Because SFO isn't on that list, leaving from it may add to the airfare, and the team confirms that figure before anything is booked. Oakland is another option, and BART gets you there too, with a change at Coliseum.
Poor visibility and close runways
SFO's parallel runways are only 750 feet apart. When visibility is low, FAA rules make arriving planes come in single file, and the airport says that cuts arrivals to about 36 an hour, often leading the FAA to slow the flow of flights heading for SFO. In 2026 the airport also warned of arrival delays from wider FAA spacing between landings and a runway closed for construction. Check SFO's travel alerts in the days before you fly, and don't pair an SFO departure with a tight connection.
A passport emergency, downtown
An expired or lost passport can hold up the whole trip. The San Francisco Passport Agency is on the third floor of 450 Golden Gate Avenue, three blocks from Civic Center/UN Plaza BART. It opens at 7:30 a.m. on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays and at 9:30 a.m. on Thursdays. It sees people by appointment only, and only if they're flying abroad within 14 calendar days or need a foreign visa within 28. Booking is free, and the State Department calls any request to pay for an appointment fraudulent.
Midday in Makkah, the small hours here
Makkah keeps Arabia Standard Time, three hours ahead of UTC, and never changes its clocks. The Bay Area does. Between early November and March, Makkah is 11 hours ahead of San Francisco, and for the rest of the year the gap is 10 hours. Noon at the Haram therefore lands at 1 a.m. or 2 a.m. on the body clock you flew out with. Expect a groggy first night or two, and keep the first day's plans light.

Umrah from San Francisco: questions
Yes. The Berman Reflection Room is a quiet space for reflection and meditation, and it includes a prayer room. It's in the main hall of the International Terminal, before security, and SFO lists it as open from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. every day. Most international flights check in at that terminal, so you can pray first and then join the checkpoint line. If your first flight leaves from a domestic terminal, the room is a free AirTrain ride away.
It's possible. OAK has its own BART station, reached with a transfer at Coliseum, and it sits just across from the Terminal 1 baggage claim. Like SFO, Oakland is not one of the five airports our airfare is priced from, so leaving from it may add to the fare.
