Umrah from Seattle made simple

Light rail runs right to the airport in this corner of the country, which makes the first stretch of an Umrah trip simple. Sound Transit's 1 Line stops at SeaTac/Airport Station, and a pedestrian bridge carries you into the terminal area. The Northwest's problem is the next stretch. None of the five gateways behind our advertised airfare is anywhere near Puget Sound, so there are two ways to go: connect onward from Sea-Tac, or fly to Los Angeles or Chicago first. Both can change what you pay for the flights, and the team confirms any difference before anyone books.

SEA

Routing

No priced gateway in the Northwest. From SEA, plan on one connection via the Gulf, Turkey or a European hub, or fly to LAX or ORD first.

Community

Across the Seattle-Tacoma-Bellevue metro area, the 2020 U.S. Religion Census found 33 Muslim congregations and about 24,600 adherents, with 23 of those congregations in King County. King County also appears on the Migration Policy Institute's short list of US counties with the largest Afghan immigrant populations. In the city itself, Idris Mosque on NE Northgate Way has been open since 1981.

Getting to Makkah from Seattle

For a lot of trips the first leg is a train. Link reaches the airport from as far north as Lynnwood and as far south as Federal Way, so much of the region can ride in without leaving a car behind. Driving is the other way, and the FAQ below covers the garage.

Then comes the long haul. With one connection in Europe or the Middle East, plan for roughly 18 to 25 hours between the gate at Sea-Tac and Jeddah. Sea-Tac isn't among our five priced gateways, and that gives you a choice. You can fly out of Sea-Tac and accept that the airfare may be higher, or position first in Los Angeles or Chicago and board the long-haul flight there. The first keeps the day simpler. The second adds a flight, and it only makes sense if the numbers and the timings work for your dates. Either way, the team confirms any airfare difference with you ahead of booking, so the choice is made with the real figure rather than a guess.

Link with luggage

SeaTac/Airport Station is on International Boulevard at South 176th Street. Ticket machines and public restrooms are on the mezzanine, before you head up to the platform, and the pedestrian bridge into the terminal area is open 24 hours a day. The platform and escalators are not. They close when light rail isn't running, so if your flight leaves at dawn, check the first train of the day before you count on it. Sound Transit has no parking at this station.

LAX or O'Hare as a starting point

Los Angeles and Chicago are the two priced gateways closest to Puget Sound, and neither is a quick hop away. If you position through one of them, treat that flight as a proper part of the trip. Leave a generous gap before the long-haul departure rather than the tightest connection on offer, and keep essentials in your carry-on in case a bag goes astray between flights. Before you choose, the team confirms what leaving from Sea-Tac instead would add to the airfare.

10 a.m. in Makkah, late night here

Seattle's clocks move twice a year, and Makkah's never do. Saudi Arabia stays on Arabia Standard Time, UTC+3, so the gap is 10 hours while Seattle is on Pacific Daylight Time, from March to early November, and 11 hours in winter. In summer, 10 a.m. in Makkah is midnight in Seattle. In winter it's 11 p.m. the night before. You'll land with your body convinced it's the middle of the night, so keep the first day gentle.

Umrah from Seattle: questions

In the airport's own garage. The Port of Seattle says it has more than 11,000 spaces for short- and long-term parking, and you can reserve ahead in the dedicated Reserved Parking area on Floor 4, where booking early gives the best availability. If you'd rather not leave a car for the whole trip, Link light rail stops beside the garage, and a bridge connects the station to the terminal.

The Seattle Passport Agency, in the Fifth and Yesler Building at 300 5th Avenue, Suite 600. It's open 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on weekdays, by appointment only, for anyone whose international trip is 14 or fewer calendar days away, or 28 if a foreign visa is involved. Bring a printed flight receipt or itinerary, the appointment confirmation, your application form, supporting documents and a photo. Booking is free.

Our 7-night flight-inclusive packages run from $1,590 to $1,890 per person on quad occupancy, with airfare, the e-visa, medical insurance, both hotels and the Haramain train inside that figure. Advertised prices are based on departures from JFK, IAD, ORD, ATL and LAX. Flying out of your city may add to the airfare, and we'll confirm exactly how much before you book anything.
