The Islamic Center of America on Ford Road was established in 1949, founded by Sheikh Muhammad Jawad Chirri, and it describes itself as a home for generations of immigrants to Michigan. Getting to Makkah from Dearborn
The airport is southwest of the city. I-94 takes you there by car, and the FAST Michigan bus runs out along Michigan Avenue for anyone who'd rather not leave a car parked for the trip. If several cars of relatives are heading to the same flight, settle the terminal and the meeting point the night before.
The ticket can be built two ways. A DTW start connects you onto a routing through a European, Turkish or Gulf hub. A gateway start means a short positioning flight first, O'Hare being the nearest of the five, and then the long-haul journey from there. Door to gate in Jeddah, expect somewhere around 18 to 24 hours, with the layovers making most of the difference.
Think about the older members of the family early. A long day with a connection is easier with a wheelchair request made ahead of time, medication in hand luggage and a seat plan that keeps a grown child next to each grandparent. Give each person a small bag with their documents and a change of clothes, and make one adult responsible for every passport until you land.
The bus down Michigan Avenue
SMART's FAST Michigan route stops at Michigan and Schaefer, Michigan and Greenfield and the Dearborn Transit Center on its way to both DTW terminals, and it runs seven days a week. SMART's route guide lists City Hall and the Arab American Museum by the Schaefer stop, if you need a landmark. For a pilgrim travelling alone with one suitcase, it's a realistic alternative to a long-stay parking space. Check SMART's current timetable against your check-in time before you rely on it.
Passport help in Arabic
The Detroit Passport Agency's web page links to Arabic-language guides to US passports, one for adults and one for minors. The agency also says you may bring someone to help you apply, such as an interpreter or a family member, which matters for parents and grandparents more at ease in Arabic. It's at 477 Michigan Avenue, on the corner of Cass, and FAST Michigan lists a stop at Michigan and Cass. Appointments there are for urgent travel, within 14 calendar days, so renew early.
Which exit, which terminal
DTW's two terminals are closest to different interstates. From I-94, the Merriman Road exit, number 198, is the nearest entrance to Evans. McNamara is closer to the I-275 entrance at Eureka Road, exit 15. Both routes feed into John D. Dingell Drive, which links the terminals. The airline on your ticket decides the terminal, so look at the boarding pass, pick the matching exit, and send it to every driver in the family before anyone sets off.

The State Department's online system books an urgent passport agency appointment for up to 7 people in one household, so ten people won't fit on a single booking. Makkah keeps Arabia Standard Time, UTC+3, and never changes its clocks. Metro Detroit runs on Eastern time, so Makkah is 7 hours ahead while daylight saving is in effect and 8 hours ahead after the clocks go back, which in 2026 happens on November 1. In practice, when you pray Fajr at the Haram, it's still the previous evening at home, a good moment to call the relatives who stayed behind.
