Umrah from Denver made simple

Back in 1974, a building on Ash Street became the first masjid in Colorado. More than fifty years later, the road to Makkah from here runs through Denver International, which handles domestic and international flights in a single terminal and has a commuter train to Union Station. That train matters. Families downtown, and pilgrims coming in by Bustang from Fort Collins or Colorado Springs, can reach their flight without leaving a car in an airport lot for the whole trip. Winter deserves respect, and so does early spring. The Weather Service ranks March as Denver's snowiest month and says it's known for the region's biggest snowfall events, so if your dates fall then, watch the forecast closely.

Routing

From DEN, flights run east or west to a priced gateway, or connect onward from Denver itself, and the long flight changes at a European, Turkish or Gulf hub

Community

Incorporated in 1964, the Colorado Muslim Society bought the building at 1401 Ash Street in 1974, and it became Colorado's first masjid. In 1978 the society bought about four acres on South Parker Road, where the first phase, including the main prayer hall, was finished in 1983. That site is home to Masjid Abu Bakr, and its weekend school teaches Qur'an, Arabic and Islamic studies to K-12 students. Across Denver, Arapahoe, Adams and Jefferson counties, the 2020 US Religion Census counted 15 Muslim congregations with an estimated 8,340 adherents.

Getting to Makkah from Denver

RTD's A Line is the simplest way in without a car. It runs from Union Station to the DEN Transit Center at the south end of Jeppesen Terminal, and several RTD bus routes stop at the same place. Every flight, domestic or international, leaves from that one terminal, and DEN suggests arriving three hours before an international departure. Which flight you board first depends on the ticket. DEN isn't one of the five airports that package airfare is priced from, which are JFK, IAD, ORD, ATL and LAX. That leaves a choice: a domestic flight to one of the five, east or west depending on the connection, or a connection straight from Denver through another hub. Any added airfare is confirmed by the team before you book. The long-haul leg connects at a European, Turkish or Gulf hub and continues to Jeddah. Allow roughly 18 to 24 hours from leaving home to landing. Then comes the last stretch to Makkah, and the adjustment. With Makkah nine hours ahead in summer, 10 p.m. there is 1 p.m. in Denver, so don't be surprised if sleep comes slowly on the first night.

Watch the forecast in March

Weather Service figures for Denver rank March as the snowiest month of the September-to-May snow season, typically accounting for about 20 percent of the annual total. The same summary from the Denver/Boulder office says March is known for the biggest snowfall events to hit the region. If you're flying out in late winter or early spring, keep an eye on the forecast in the days before, allow extra time on the roads, and check your flight status before you leave the house. A heavy storm can upend a travel day.

Coming in from elsewhere in Colorado

Bustang, the interregional bus run by the Colorado Department of Transportation, connects Union Station with Colorado Springs, Fort Collins, Vail, Glenwood Springs, Fort Morgan and other towns. DEN's own website points travelers from outside Denver to exactly that pairing: Bustang into Union Station, then the A Line out to the airport. For a pilgrim in the Springs or up north, it can mean no car parked at the airport for the length of the trip. Check the Bustang timetable against your flight time before relying on it.

One terminal, and the A gates on the way back

There's no separate international terminal to find at DEN. Jeppesen Terminal handles both. Airline counters sit on its east and west sides, so find out which side yours uses before you're dropped off. If your flight home lands at DEN directly from abroad, it arrives at the A gates, and you follow signs to US Customs and Border Protection, where officers examine passports before you collect your bags. The airport also offers help by phone at (720) 730-4359 through an interpreter, with more than 240 languages available, useful for an older relative who is more comfortable in another language.

Umrah from Denver: questions

Visit Denver puts the 23-mile ride at about 37 minutes and says A Line cars have overhead storage and luggage towers. At the airport end, trains arrive at the DEN Transit Center, which sits at the south end of Jeppesen Terminal and connects to it by escalator and elevator. RTD buses serve the same transit center, including routes AB, AT, 104L, 145X and 169L. With a family group and several suitcases, build a margin on top of the three hours DEN suggests for international flights.

Both, depending on the time of year. Denver observes daylight saving time and Saudi Arabia doesn't. On Mountain Daylight Time, UTC-6, from March to early November, Makkah is nine hours ahead. On Mountain Standard Time, UTC-7, the gap is ten hours. Arabia Standard Time stays at UTC+3 all year. So 9 a.m. in Makkah is midnight in Denver during the summer months, worth remembering when family want to call.

Our 7-night flight-inclusive packages run from $1,590 to $1,890 per person on quad occupancy, with airfare, the e-visa, medical insurance, both hotels and the Haramain train inside that figure. Advertised prices are based on departures from JFK, IAD, ORD, ATL and LAX. Flying out of your city may add to the airfare, and we'll confirm exactly how much before you book anything.
