Umrah from Kansas City made simple

If you haven't flown out of KCI in a few years, the airport you remember, with its horseshoe-shaped buildings, has been replaced by a single new terminal, and that's where an Umrah journey from here now begins. MCI isn't on our list of five priced gateways, so the team checks any airfare difference and tells you before you book. Expect at least one connection. Sometimes that means a domestic hop to a larger gateway before the change at a European, Turkish or Gulf hub, and it makes for a long day from this far inland. The notes below cover the new terminal, the one bus line that serves it and the winter weather, freezing rain included.

Routing

From MCI, expect at least one connection, sometimes a domestic hop to a larger gateway first, then a European, Turkish or Gulf hub before Jeddah.

Community

Muslim institutions sit on both sides of the state line. The Islamic Society of Greater Kansas City, at 8501 E 99th Street in Kansas City, Missouri, runs a Quran Academy that covers tajweed, memorization and Arabic reading, along with youth workshops and burial services. In Overland Park, Kansas, the Islamic Center of Johnson County serves its county and the wider Kansas City metro with a weekday IQRA Institute, a weekend academy, tafsir and seerah classes, and even a robotics team in its STEM club.

Getting to Makkah from Kansas City

Everything after MCI depends on the first flight. If it leaves late, the connection is what suffers, so get to the terminal with time to spare and choose itineraries with a generous layover. Depending on the routing, you'll either fly straight to a European, Turkish or Gulf hub or take a short domestic flight to a larger gateway first. Either way, the long flight to Jeddah comes after the last change of plane, and from Jeddah the rest of the way to Makkah is already arranged. Kansas City sits well inland, and two connections are sometimes part of the picture, so allow roughly 18 to 23 hours door to gate. Pack for that. Medication, a charger, a warm layer in case the cabin runs cold and a change of clothes all belong in your carry-on. Eat properly at the connection rather than living on airplane snacks. If an older relative needs a wheelchair, arrange the airline's assistance in advance so nobody is asking for it at the gate.

Know the new terminal before you go

KCI's single terminal opened on February 28, 2023, replacing horseshoe-shaped terminals that dated from 1972. It has 40 gates under one roof. Habits from the old airport, like where to be dropped off or how long the walk to the gate takes, won't carry over, so look at the airport's current maps a few days ahead and give yourself extra time on the day. Older relatives especially will appreciate knowing where they're going before they arrive with suitcases and a very long flight ahead of them.

Taking the 229 bus

In April 2026, KCUR reported that RideKC's route 229 was the only bus line to the airport. It starts at the East Village Transit Center downtown, the first weekday trip leaves around 3:45 a.m., and the ride takes just under an hour. Buses ran only once an hour, and the last trip of the day left at 9:45 p.m. That can work for a morning flight. With hourly buses, though, one late or missing trip leaves no margin, so confirm RideKC's current schedule before relying on it.

Watch for ice, not just snow

The National Weather Service's Kansas City office puts average winter snowfall at 18.8 inches, counting October through April over the 1981-2010 period. The same office publishes a freezing rain climatology, and freezing rain deserves as much respect as snow when you're planning an early drive to MCI. For departures from December to February, leave home early, keep the first connection generous and have a backup ride lined up. Check the forecast the evening before, not only on the morning itself.

Umrah from Kansas City: questions

No. None of the passport agencies and centers the State Department lists is in Missouri or Kansas. Reaching one means a long drive or a flight, for example to the Arkansas Passport Center in Hot Springs or to the agencies in Dallas, Minneapolis or Chicago. They see people by appointment only, mainly those with international travel inside two weeks, and they ask for printed proof of the trip. The better plan is to apply or renew well before you settle on Umrah dates.

Add eight hours between March and early November, and nine hours in winter. Makkah stays on UTC+3 all year while Kansas City moves its clocks. So a 6 p.m. departure from MCI in October is already 2 a.m. the next day in Makkah, and you'll land after a long day and a short night. One habit helps: once you board the long flight, set your watch to Makkah time and eat and rest by it.

Our 7-night flight-inclusive packages run from $1,590 to $1,890 per person on quad occupancy, with airfare, the e-visa, medical insurance, both hotels and the Haramain train inside that figure. Advertised prices are based on departures from JFK, IAD, ORD, ATL and LAX. Flying out of your city may add to the airfare, and we'll confirm exactly how much before you book anything.
