Five minutes on NJ Transit is all that separates Newark Penn Station from the airport's own rail station, which makes EWR an easy place to start for anyone downtown. There's one thing to understand before you book, though. Our airfare is priced from five US gateways, and the nearest of them is JFK in Queens, not Newark Liberty. You can still ask about leaving from EWR. Any extra airfare for a Newark departure is confirmed by the team before you commit, so you'll know the difference while there's still time to choose.

Essex County, which includes Newark, had an estimated 41,600 Muslim adherents in 19 congregations in the 2020 US Religion Census, and Pew's 2023-24 study puts Muslims at about 2% of New Jersey adults. Masjid Muhammad on South Orange Avenue, in the association of Imam W.D. Mohammed, holds Jumu'ah every Friday, runs a Sunday weekend school and serves hot meals to neighbors every other Sunday. Newark's public schools close for Eid al-Fitr.
Getting to Makkah from Newark
From downtown, the train is hard to beat. Northeast Corridor and North Jersey Coast Line trains reach Newark Liberty International Airport Station about five minutes after leaving Newark Penn, and the AirTrain carries you on to the terminals. The Port Authority is modernizing the AirTrain to handle more passengers and improve access to Terminal A, and it warns of temporary disruptions; shuttle buses run whenever the trains don't. Being dropped off? Use the curb at your own terminal.
If you fly from JFK instead, you're heading to the priced gateway, and the rail route there runs through New York Penn Station. Either way, you'll probably change planes at a hub in Europe, Turkey or the Gulf, and spend something like 15 to 20 hours in transit. After landing in Jeddah there's still a road or rail transfer to Makkah. Saudi Arabia doesn't change its clocks, so Makkah is 7 hours ahead of Newark while New Jersey is on daylight saving time and 8 hours ahead once it falls back in November.
Terminal A is not on the AirTrain
Terminal A needs its own plan. The AirTrain doesn't connect to Terminal A directly, and the airport describes the last stretch as a 15-minute walk along a covered pathway or a 5-minute shuttle ride. From the rail station, allow about 20 minutes in all. With a wheelchair, heavy bags or older parents, that gap matters, so check your terminal before you leave the house and, if you're being driven and your flight leaves from A, go straight to that curb.
Buses from Newark Penn and the neighborhoods
Not everyone lives near a train. NJ Transit bus routes 28, 37, 62, 67 and 107 serve the airport, and the Port Authority lists frequent service from Newark Penn Station, leaving from the Raymond Boulevard bus lanes at Gate 3A during the day and Gate 2A after 10 p.m. Other routes pass through Irvington, Maplewood and Bloomfield. Check the NJ Transit schedule for your stop the week before, because timings change and an early flight leaves little room.
Parking, hotel shuttles and rental cars
If the family would rather drive and leave the car, each EWR terminal station sits next to its own short-term lot, and long-term parking is a shuttle ride from the terminal stations. P4 daily parking has its own AirTrain stop. Hotel shuttles collect from the P3 station, which helps if you're staying near the airport the night before an early departure. Rental cars are a five-minute walk from the Terminal A AirTrain station, and moving around the airport on the AirTrain costs nothing.

Umrah from Newark: questions
Take NJ Transit from Newark Penn to New York Penn Station, then the Long Island Rail Road or the E train to Jamaica, where the AirTrain runs to JFK's terminals. JFK's own website puts the whole trip from Newark Penn at about 1 hour 20 minutes by either combination. With construction slowing traffic on JFK's roads, the rail route can be the more predictable choice, though it's a long ride with luggage, so leave a wide margin.
It does run overnight. Between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m. Eastern, trains call at Terminals B and C every 15 minutes, and a shuttle covers the extra transfer to Terminal A. During the current modernization work, shuttle buses also replace the AirTrain whenever it's out of service. For a flight in the early hours, build those gaps into your timing and look at the airport's advisories page before you set off.
