Umrah from Portland made simple

Distance does most of the shaping for an Umrah trip that starts at PDX. The first stretch is easy, because the MAX Red Line serves Portland International every 15 minutes and stops at the south end of the terminal. After that, PDX isn't on the short list of five airports we price airfare from, which leaves two routes. You can connect onward from PDX, or fly to one of those five first and catch the long-haul flight there. Leaving from PDX may cost more in airfare, and the team confirms how much before booking. Sort passports out early, too. The nearest passport agency is up in Seattle.

Routing

PDX isn't a priced gateway, so fly via a Turkish, Gulf or European hub, or take a flight to LAX to begin the long leg.

Community

The 2020 U.S. Religion Census recorded far fewer Muslim congregations around Portland than around Seattle: 12 in the Portland-Vancouver-Hillsboro metro, with about 5,400 adherents, more of whom were counted in Washington County than in Multnomah County. The Muslim Educational Trust, based on SW Scholls Ferry Road in Tigard, has served Oregon since 1993 and runs ISMET and OIA, Islamic schools that together cover PreK to 12th grade.

Getting to Makkah from Portland

By car, the airport itself says to allow 30 to 45 minutes between downtown Portland and PDX, and its directions send you along I-205 to the Airport Way West exit. Once inside, either security checkpoint gets you to any gate.

In the air, a single connection overseas puts you at roughly 19 to 26 hours before you land in Jeddah. The other option is to position at LAX or another of our five priced gateways and pick up the long-haul flight there, which adds a flight but sometimes suits the dates better. Whichever you lean toward, the team confirms any extra airfare from PDX before you book.

Plan for the clock as well. Portland runs 11 hours behind Makkah in winter and 10 hours behind once daylight saving starts in March, so an 8 a.m. start at the Haram is 9 p.m. the previous day at home in winter, or 10 p.m. in summer. After a trip this long you'll feel that on arrival. A quiet first day helps.

Urgent passports mean a trip north

Oregon has no passport agency of its own, so the closest help is the Seattle Passport Agency, which works by appointment only. If you've already applied and your plans become urgent, the State Department asks you to call 877-487-2778 instead of booking online. If there's time to issue the passport before you travel, it alerts the office handling your application. If not, it books you an appointment. Whatever your dates, get the passport settled before anything else, because the rest of the trip is built on it.

Wheelchair help and a changed terminal

Traveling with an elderly parent? PDX offers free wheelchair assistance, which you can request on 503-460-4300. The building has also changed a lot. Sixty percent of the new main terminal opened in August 2024, the airport says the rest is opening in stages, and the baggage claim area is still being updated. If you last flew from PDX a few years ago, give yourself extra time to find your way, and follow the signs to the checkpoint for your gate.

If you fly home into PDX

Should your return flight land at PDX from overseas, you'll go through Passport Control first, then collect your bags and clear U.S. Customs and Agriculture. A shuttle bus takes you on to the terminal's baggage claim level, opposite carousel 9, where there are free luggage carts. The airport puts the whole process at roughly 20 to 90 minutes, depending on the queue. Travelers already approved for Global Entry can use its kiosks there.

Umrah from Portland: questions

It does. The MAX Red Line serves PDX with trains every 15 minutes, and the station is at the south end of the terminal building. You can reach it from either the ticket lobby level or the baggage claim level. For an early flight, check the Red Line schedule for your exact departure day, and leave room for the walk from the platform to check-in with your bags.

No. PDX doesn't take parking reservations, and its lots are first come, first served. The airport's website shows how full the short-term garage, the long-term garage and the economy lot are, so look before you leave home. Valet parking is listed as another option. For a trip that keeps you away for well over a week, a drop-off or the MAX Red Line may simply be easier.

Our 7-night flight-inclusive packages run from $1,590 to $1,890 per person on quad occupancy, with airfare, the e-visa, medical insurance, both hotels and the Haramain train inside that figure. Advertised prices are based on departures from JFK, IAD, ORD, ATL and LAX. Flying out of your city may add to the airfare, and we'll confirm exactly how much before you book anything.
