Umrah from Austin made simple
The drive to Austin-Bergstrom is the first leg of the trip, and the airport is in the middle of a long expansion. Construction walls and scaffolding are up on the departures and arrivals levels of the Barbara Jordan Terminal, and before Labor Day 2026 the airport told travelers to allow extra time for traffic. Package airfare is calculated from five other gateways, not AUS. A departure here may cost more, and you'll know by how much before you book. You'll change planes at least once, and possibly twice, before Saudi Arabia. The notes below cover the bus to the airport and the pickup once you're home.

Nueces Mosque, at 1906 Nueces Street, describes its congregation as Muslim students, families and professionals who gather for prayer, learning and each other's company, and it invites people to come for prayer and stay for food. Across the two counties, 2020 census-of-congregations data on the ARDA site shows 10 Muslim congregations in Travis County with an estimated 15,968 adherents, and four more in Williamson County with about 5,400.
Getting to Makkah from Austin
From Austin there are two sensible patterns. One is to fly from AUS throughout, connecting at a larger US hub, overseas, or both. Alternatively, a domestic hop gets you to one of our five priced gateways, JFK, IAD, ORD, ATL or LAX, and the long-haul leg begins there. The team works out whether leaving from Austin adds to the airfare and tells you before you commit.
Budget roughly 18 to 25 hours of travel, depending on how many connections the routing needs. With more than one change, the timing of each connection matters more than the total. A tight layover looks efficient on screen, but it leaves no room for a late inbound flight, and one missed connection can cost you the one after it. If older relatives are traveling, pick the longer layover even when a shorter one is offered.
One local detail for the trip home: if your car is in the Blue Garage, the airport says the exit ramp closes intermittently between 1 and 8 a.m. through 2026 while the Yellow Garage is built. Detour signs lead to another exit.
An airport under expansion
AUS is in the middle of its Journey With AUS expansion program, and the airport's own blog notes that things on campus are changing fast. Road and garage detours come and go as the work moves. In September 2026, for example, a return loop on Presidential Boulevard was closed for about three weeks. Check the construction updates page on flyaustin.com the week you leave. CapMetro to the airport
CapMetro's Route 20 starts at the airport and runs along Riverside Drive to downtown and the UT campus, every 15-30 minutes, seven days a week. If you land late, Route 483 Night Owl runs from after midnight to 4 a.m., starting at the airport and serving Montopolis by way of Riverside before ending downtown on 6th Street. At AUS the stop is on the lower level, just outside baggage claim. Look for the neon guitar, which is hard to miss.
The pickup when you land
Rideshare and taxi pickups for arriving passengers are under the Consolidated Rental Car Facility, just north of, or behind, the Red Garage. Knowing that before you land saves a confused walk at the end of a long trip. AUS also has a Mobility Assistance Zone, open daily from 7 a.m. to 2 a.m., where rideshares, taxis and wheelchair-accessible vehicles collect passengers who use a wheelchair, scooter or crutches, or who need other help getting around. That's useful if an older parent is flying back with you.

Umrah from Austin: questions
Congressman Lloyd Doggett's office points Austin residents to the Houston Passport Agency, at 1919 Smith Street. Agencies like it see people by appointment when they're traveling within 14 days or need a foreign visa, and you must bring a ticket or itinerary. San Antonio was selected in 2024 for an agency of its own, but no opening dates had been set when that was announced. Check the current list on travel.state.gov before you make the drive to Houston.
Before Labor Day 2026, the airport advised arriving 2.5 hours before a domestic flight and 3 hours before an international one. That's a sensible rule for an Umrah departure too, especially with construction around the terminal. AUS has four TSA checkpoints, and most open daily at 3 a.m., which matters if your first flight to a connecting hub leaves at dawn. Between them, the checkpoints offer general screening, TSA PreCheck and priority lanes.
