Why perform Umrah in August?

August is a short window for most American families, and how short depends on where you live. Pew Research Center found back-to-school dates running from late July to after Labor Day. In Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas and Louisiana nearly every student was back by 18 August in the 2023-24 school year, while in New England almost nobody started before the last week of the month. So for families in Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas and Louisiana, August usually means the first week or so, and earlier still in Alabama, Kentucky, Mississippi, Tennessee, Florida and Georgia. In the Northeast it can mean most of the month. On the Hijri calendar, Rabi al-Awwal 1449 begins on Tuesday 3 August. The weather is the hard part. August is the hottest month of the year in Madinah, and the one month when Madinah, not Makkah, is the hotter city by day.

  • Fits before the school year in the Northeast, where most students go back in late August or after Labor Day
  • Still the quieter half of the Umrah year for pilgrims from abroad: about 1.44 million in August 2025, against 2.14 million that December
  • Rabi al-Awwal 1449 begins on 3 August
  • Madinah is at its hottest, so we plan the days around early mornings and late nights
  • Register interest now. We set August dates and hotels only after the 1449 calendar is published

Weather in August

August is Madinah's hottest month, averaging 111°F by day and 87°F at night. Makkah is close behind at 109°F and 86°F. Rain is rare: Makkah sees less than one rainy day in an average August. Water and an afternoon rest are not optional this month.

August 2027 Umrah: FAQs

It depends on your district. Pew Research Center's look at the 2023-24 school year found start dates from late July to after Labor Day. In Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas and Louisiana, 94% of students went back between 7 and 18 August. In New England almost no one started before the week of 28 August, and in the Middle Atlantic states about three in four started after Labor Day. Check your own district calendar, and when you register interest, tell us the last date you can be away.

Less than in winter. Saudi government figures counted about 1.44 million Umrah pilgrims from abroad in August 2025, a little more than July and well below the 2.14 million of December. The climb from the end of Hajj to the end of the year has repeated in each of the last four years.

By day, yes, and August is the only month of the year when that is true. Madinah's average high is 111°F against 109°F in Makkah, and its nights average 87°F. For the rest of the year Makkah is the hotter city by day, and from October onward Madinah is clearly the cooler one. The practical point: in August, do not plan the Madinah half as a rest from the heat.

There is no price for August 2027 yet, because there are no dates or hotels yet either. Saudi Arabia has not announced the next Umrah season. Register your interest on this page and we will send you dates, named hotels and a price as soon as they are set, before the departure is advertised.

“My 2nd Umrah with Qibla Gateway was incredible. Called Brother Ali on Wednesday on short notice, everything was booked by Thursday, and I traveled Friday to Monday. He got me a hotel right across Gate 79 of Masjid Al Haram and the transport team confirmed every ride an hour early. Super smooth service — highly recommended!”

“My husband and I recently came back from our first umrah trip in June using Qibla Gateway's services, and it was a great experience. Our travel agent, brother Asad Khan, was very helpful and walked us through the process each step of the way. As first timers, it can be pretty daunting to keep up with all the procedures, rules and guidelines, but brother Asad and Qibla Gateway made the process smooth and supportive. The trip package was also very reasonably priced.”
